A GENTLEMAN’S GUIDE TO MEN’S FRAGRANCES
November 18, 2020
Trying to choose the right fragrance can be a little tricky with the amount of options that are packed onto the retail shelf here at the barbershop. Luckily though, today we’re going to break it down and talk about the the different qualities of the products within the range and also outline some of our favourites.
Let’s take a look at the difference between deodorant, aftershave, cologne and eau de toilette.
A common misconception is that all of the mens fragrance products can be used interchangeably. However to clear that up, we should first outline the different qualities and intended use of each.
Deodorants help to prevent unpleasant body odours by eliminating the natural bacteria that occurs on your skin. Antiperspirants actually prevent the sweating itself.
Aftershaves are purposefully designed for use straight after shaving. They carry ingredients to soothe and cool the skin after the rigours of shaving and they contain less perfume oil than colognes or eau de toilettes. The lighter fragrance in after shaves only last for a few hours.
For longer lasting fragrance you should look towards a cologne or eau de toilette. Colognes are generally made up of 2%-5% perfume oil and eau de toilettes may comprise of anywhere up to or even beyond 10%. This is far too much perfume oil to apply to ones face and should instead be applied to the neck, wrist or chest. The products at this end of the spectrum provide multiple layers and notes of fragrance that can last throughout the day.
Establishing your own signature scent.
One of the first things you’ll probably notice is that our products differ from those you’ll find at the supermarket, chemist or department store. Instead of the common place products, we stock a range of barbershop only brands and sophisticated scents from boutique providers. After all you want to establish your own signature scent, not smell the same as every other Tom, Dick and Harry. Below is a curated a list of our tried, tested and recommended products.
18.21 Man Made Deodorant- Featuring the mild aroma of Sweet Tabacco or Spiced Vanilla. Made without aluminium, alcohol, or baking soda, the gel stick is perfect for men with sensitive armpits.
Proraso Single Blade Series After Shave Balm - Choose between three fragrances of Wood and Spice, Azur Lime and Cypress & Vetyver. Diminishes any tension, irritation and dryness left from shaving. Leaves an enjoyable nuance without being invasive.
Truefitt & Hill Apsley Cologne - Formulated to ignite the senses with a refined blend of smouldering woods that are accentuated by light citrus notes.
Eau De Toilette
18.21 Man Made Men’s Cologne - Don’t be fooled by the name, this is a parfum-grade scent and is made in small batches in a niche barrel house. It contains a 20% oil blend of nearly 30 oils, 80% denatured alcohol and no water. With a 10-12-hour projection, a little goes a long way and it is ridiculously well priced.
Come in and get yourself a new scent for the season, ask the staff if you have any questions, they are always ready to help.
