A TRADITIONAL SHAVING SET FOR YOUR SENSITIVE SKIN

January 4, 2022

A frequently raised issue by clients in the barbershop is shaving for men with sensitive skin. For many men the preferred solution to this is to simply give up on shaving altogether. This however is not necessary and with the right advise a comfortable, clean shave is possible for every man.

Traditional Shaving Sets From Proraso

With all of the flashy modern razors and five blade contraptions it may be hard to believe that the most traditional of shaving tools are the perfect solution for the issues arising from shaving for men with sensitive skin. Unexpected or not, read on for some barberly advice on the benefits that a tradition shaving set offers.

The discomfort caused by shaving for men with sensitive skin can be caused by multiple reasons however the primary causation is friction. Reducing or removing friction from the process is why traditional shaving methods trump the modern multi blade gimmicks. The traditional method achieves this in several ways.

Pre- Shave

The correct preparation of face and beard is the first step in the traditional process. This is achieved by introducing heat and moisture. At home a hot shower is a good idea. At the barbershop a steaming hot towel is used. After this apply Pre Shaving Cream to open the pores and soften the beard.

Shaving Soap & Shaving Brush

Next, a damp, traditional shaving brush and soap are used to work up a smooth lather. This is applied to the face with the brush and worked into the beard in a circular motion. This action raises the hair from the follicles and continues to soften the beard. The best shaving brushes are manufactured using real badger hair while synthetic options are more accessible and vegan friendly. High quality shaving soaps will provide effortless glide of the razor and include soothing extracts to further reduce the chance of irritation.

The Single Blade razor

It is either marketing genius or a general misconception that more razor blades on a razor offers less friction when shaving. Either way, this is completely false and it is in fact the traditional single blade razor that makes the least contact with the skin. This creates less drag, less friction, less heat and less razor burn. A classic safety razor is the easiest to use whereas a cut-throat requires practice for good mastery.

After Shave Balm

To close out the process and ensure that there is no onset of discomfort after shaving, a balm with antiseptic and soothing properties is applied to create a protective barrier to the skin. Extracts of tea tree, eucalyptus, menthol, aloe and vitamin E are common ingredients to look for.

Proraso

We recommend a shaving kit made up of products from the Proraso sensitive and Proraso Protect  ranges and find these to be the best for men with skin that tends to irritate easily. Just choose a quality razor and shaving brush to accompany these products from Proraso and you're all set.
