HOW TO RECREATE THAT BARBERSHOP HAIRSTYLE AT HOME

March 9, 2022

It is a pretty special feeling to walk out of the barbershop with a fresh haircut that the barber has meticulously styled and crafted into the ‘perfect look’. With a little advice from the barber there is no reason why the same professional look cannot be recreated at home. Today we provide that advise as we break down a couple of popular hairstyles and outline how to style them at home.

The Slick Back

The old school greaser hairstyles have a certain aura of sophistication about them and yet they are rooted in the rebellious rockabilly days of the 1950’s.

To achieve a great side part, slick back or pompadour at home, you will need a hair dryer, comb and a quality pomade. The key attributes to look for in the pomade are hold and shine. For these hairstyles we recommend Uppercut Deluxe Pomade which offers both a high level of hold and high shine. It is Australian made and water based for easy removal and available for purchase here at Barber Industries Westfield Carousel.

Start by combing the hair into shape while applying the hairdryer at the same time. Focus on creating volume in the front and brushing the sides back. Work the pomade between the palms of your hands to coat them evenly and then pull your hands and fingers through your hair, starting on the sides of the head first. Use a comb to make sure the pomade is evenly distributed and to pull the hair up and back into place. Hairspray may be used to assist with holding height on a high volume pompadour.

"It generally takes some practice to learn how to create and manage the volume as well as how to handle the comb correctly, remember that practice makes perfect."

Messy Crop

The crop is a short hairstyle that is all about texture and easy wearing. There are a few different ways to wear a crop however it is usually paired with a fade on the back and sides and a blunt fringe. The fringe can be anywhere from super short through to long hanging down to the brows.

The ease of styling and maintenance is one of the things that makes the textured or messy crop such a popular hairstyle choice. You really only need some texturising powder and or a matte pomade to achieve the look.

Start with dry hair or blow dry if necessary. Dust with stying powder and then use your fingers to rake the powder through the hair to create a textured effect. We use Uppercut Deluxe Styling Powder here in the barbershop and it is also available for purchase. Follow this with a matte pomade by rubbing a small amount between the palms of your hands and then apply once again in a raking motion, further building texture and volume as you go. To finish, use your finger tips to tousle and form for a completed look.

"An alternative styling method is use a wide toothed comb to finish the look. After applying powder and or a pomade, use the comb pull the hair forward in a criss cross motion. This will leave a patterned effect that is very contemporary and more of a polished style."
