When it comes to men’s grooming and hair styling products it has been made all too easy for us to get behind and support our local hero in the Uppercut Deluxe Brand. We reckon that the products are next level while remaining competitively priced against other brands. Lets take a look at this Australian success story that has been taking the worlds barbershops by storm.

Childhood friends Luke Newman and Steve Purcell are the creative brains behind this homegrown hero. Both share a love of barbering, surf & skate and that culture along with its underlying style shines through in the brand and identity.

The driving force behind Uppercut Deluxe was a frustration of using mediocre products that were geared more towards a man’s wife than the man himself. The boys wanted to create something that would suit the vibe of their barbershop be something they could use and be proud to promote.

The story of the brands namesake is a ripper with Newman’s Grandfather Willy OShea being an old boxer from the Jimmy Sharman’s boxing troupe that toured rural Australia during the years of the great depression. Willy was a tough old lad who had a really tough upbringing and his nickname ‘Uppercut’ makes for a fitting foundation to this kickass home grown brand.

We are always using Uppercut Deluxe to style after cuts in the barbershop and we also sell to the public, lets take a look at some of the range and the qualities that each product offers.

Deluxe Pomade is water based, has a high shine, offers a strong hold without stiffness and is perfect for medium length styles like pompadours, side parts and slick backs.

Matte Pomade is water based, provides a natural matte look with no shine and will achieve a diverse range of both classic and modern styles.

Easy Hold is water based and is perfect for loose, textured styles where a natural finish is desired.

Matte Clay is oil based, has low shine and offers a strong but rewardable hold, perfect for textured styles and difficult to control hair.

Featherweight is water based with a firm hold and low shine, perfect for adding volume and lift to all short to medium length styles.

Monster Hold is wax based, offers a heavy and strong hold and is perfect for all styles that need hardcore control.

Styling Powder is quickly becoming our favourite for modern textured styles, it is perfect for crops or messy quiffs and excels in thinner or fine hair.

Today Willy’s legacy lives on through the home grown hero that is Uppercut Deluxe and their commitment to creating the highest quality products that will go the distance and give you that knockout look! Find their range on the products shelves or ask the staff in store.

The idea of a safe space is one that can vary depending on what situation men are in, where they want to go, or what they’re trying to escape from. Some men might see their kitchens as a safe space, while others seek refuge in a pub sipping away their worries. Yet, the traditional barbershop has always been an area where men can enter in their time of grooming needs but also find that sacred space that is truly theirs.

It is a statistic that comes a little hard to comprehend but the reality is that one Australian is killed by melanoma every five hours and two out of every three Australians are likely to get some form of skin cancer before they’re seventy. Most of us would easily recognise the striped pole that can be found outside many Barbershops. A white pole with red and blue stripes, spinning away. It catches your attention, it is a well known motif of the barbershop, but have you ever wondered how it came to be and what it actually symbolises?
