A MEN'S GUIDE TO SURVIVING THE SYDNEY COVID LOCKDOWN

July 15, 2021

It's been a tough few weeks in Sydney with the whole city under lockdown due to an outbreak of the Delta variant of Covid-19. The barbershop is closed and blokes are no doubt starting to look pretty scruffy while holed up at home. Today a fresh announcement that the lockdown will be extended for at least a further two weeks. With no idea how long this will go on for, we've decided to put together a survival guide with some thoughts on how to best survive the lockdown.

Don't leave the house unless it's essential

It's like listening to a broken record when Gladys and her gang deliver the daily case count and urge residents to "stay indoors unless it's highly essential". Not to make a joke of it and not to suggest that this is not a serious public health issue either, but the repetitiveness is enough to do your head in. Best not to watch the mainstream media if you want to keep your sanity through this difficult period.

Keep both mind and body active

It is important that blokes are looking after their mental health during these tough times. It's no good to be sitting around all day and regular exercise will help keep your mind off the terrible press conferences that we mentioned earlier.

With gyms closed, it's time to find other ways of staying active. Get out for a run or try some bodyweight exercise to fill the void. Washing the car or mowing the lawn is a good way to keep busy while also making sure you're still getting some muscle movement in.

Utilise Home Delivery Services

Getting out and about to the shops too often can be risky so a good way to limit exposure is by utilising delivery services like Ubereats or having your groceries delivered to your door by Woolworths.

Let The System Work For You

The federal government has just announced new rates of assistance available under the COVID-19 Disaster Payment Scheme. From week four of the lockdown a person who has lost 20 hours or more of work a week is eligible for $600 each week. A person who has lost between 8 and 20 hours of work is able to access $375 each week in assistance. There are also new grants on offer for business with a reduced turnover. To find out if you're eligible visit the service Australia website.

Final Word

Sydney looks like staying in lockdown for some time, so stay active, be smart and try to find the positives. After all, it's not like we're being nuked from space or anything! Be safe and stay strong everyone. We look forward to shearing off some pretty wild winter coats when this whole mess is behind us.
