USING POMADE TO CREATE WELL STRUCTURED MEN’S HAIRSTYLES

October 22, 2022

There is a mind blowing amount of different men’s hair styling products in the market today and each has a different use case scenario. In today’s article we are going to focus on pomades and how they can be used to create well structured hairstyles for men.

The first step is the ‘pre-styling’ process and the goal is to wash out any residual product and ensure that your hair is clean and ready to style. Ideally you will begin with freshly washed and towel dried hair.

A pre styler is optional and the benefits of using one are more pronounced when used in longer hair and for high volume, well structured hairstyles like pompadours. Here at Barber Industries Tuggerah we like to use American Crew Prep & Prime Tonic for this.

The next step is to bust out the hair dryer and start working the hair into the desired style with a quiff roller or your fingers and hands. For best results use a medium heat setting and work the hair towards the finished direction.

It is now time for the pomade to play its part and do do this you will want to rub the goo between the palm of your hands to get it warmed up, smooth, tacky and ready to apply.

Work through your hair using your fingers from root to tip to distribute evenly.

Heavy pomades can actually be pretty powerful and deceptively you don’t usually need much.  It’s important to emphasise this point because once there is too much product applied to the hair the style can become bogged down and it is very difficult to go back. It is better to gradually layer in more product as it is needed than to go all in.

Use a comb to tame any flyaways and pull everything together into a refined and slick hairstyle. Finish with a wide toothed styling comb to add a little definition and volume.
