THE RETURN OF THE BARBERSHOP SHAVE

February 26, 2022

In the seeking of the quickest shave possible, it may seem that we have somehow lost our way when it comes to the male shaving ritual. What was once a trip to the barbershop for a chin wag, shave and some enjoyment has become a daily task to despise. Where did we loose our way and are we moving full circle when it comes to male grooming?

Traditionally a trip to the barbershop for a shave provided men with much more than just a clean shave. The barbershop was one of the busiest establishments in most towns and it was a meeting place where social discourse and an opportunity to catch up on current affairs would take place.

With the invention of safety razors and the belittling of the barbershop shave came a period where shaving become nothing more than a daily chore, something to be completed as quickly as possible and without any of its traditional enjoyment or the social release that a trip to the barbershop provided.

With the invention of the multi blade razor and shaving foam in can, came the darkest days in men’s grooming. Men had lost their traditional visit to the barbershop and were instead gifted with the task of shaving at home by themselves. In societies where a ten hour work day and a commute were commonplace, men had become extremely time poor and had ‘lost their way’ as they ground out their days.

In the modern day, men are no less short of time however with all the craziness of the modern lifestyle they are once again seeking the refuge of the old world barbershop. It is here, laying back in the barbers chair while the barber applies the age old traditional craft and cut throat shave that the modern man finds his escape, a moment away from the grindstone and the hustle.

"Comfort found in the barbers skilful craft, a time to take a break, kick back, relax and enjoy the process."
