THE WILD HAIRSTYLES OF PRESCHOOL BOYS

February 15, 2022
When it comes to choosing a hairstyle at the barbershop, pre school aged boys would have to be the most wild and free of all the age brackets. They tend to choose their hairstyle based purely on want and not on the expectations of others. There are valuable lessons that can be learnt from these decisions, if they are allowed to be made.

There comes a time when our little men stop stumbling around in toddlerhood and become much more firm on their feet. It is at this inquisitive and explorative age that boys start to take interest in their appearance and become much more self conscious and self aware. You may often find them watching themselves in the mirror or taking endless rolls of selfies on your i-phone.

The thing with boys at this age is that they are very inquisitive, can be very bold and very bull-headed. These are the boys who are not yet moulded by our social constructs and will bravely rock the most wild of hairstyles when given the opportunity to make decisions about their haircut for themselves.

An absence of the rules and a disregard for normality makes way for some very creative and unique hairstyles on the heads of pre-school aged boys. Spiderwebs, Batman symbols, zig zag lines and patterns are all common requests. The addition of colored (temporary) hairsprays is another new and evolving trend that we are glad to be able to offer.

It may not be every parents cup of tea but giving the young boys the opportunity to make these decisions for themselves can be very empowering for them. It can be a much harder ask to let go of this control as a parent than it is for the boys to adopt ownership of their choices.

At the end of the day this freedom of choice encourages boys to be themselves without fear and by supporting them in these decisions a greater sense of trust can be fostered between parent and child.

Choosing their own haircut might seem like an insignificant little thing, however, it’s a small choice that provides valuable life lessons that they can carry with them as they get older and face more difficult situations.
